In October of 2019, we prayed and planned out our next year. We do this every year. Only in 2019, we added extra detail and more depth to our plan.  We planned a robust year full of new business ventures, networking, serving our communities, and lots of traveling.  We had vision and a solid plan to carry it out.  On New Year’s Eve 2019/2020, we were excited for all that 2020 would bring.  We had no idea 2020 would be the kind of year it was.  But it ended up developing in us more than we could have ever planned for ourselves.  Here’s our year in review.

JANUARY

Somehow Krissy forgot to tell us that there was an out of state dance convention from January 3-5.  It wasn’t until New Year’s Eve that she remembered that she had to be in San Francisco just days later .  LaToya spent the first few days of the year scrambling to make travel arrangements and somehow pulled it off.  Krissy, the baby, and LaToya hopped on a plane for the hip hop Kaos convention. Although it was stretch to pull off, it was nice for the three of them to have some time away. Meanwhile, LaShawn held down the fort at home, daddy style.

Just two weeks later, the whole family drove to Anaheim for Kaitlyn’s dance performance at Disneyland.  Thank God the Disney trip had been planned months in advance.  We had an awesome time at Disney, Kaitlyn did great, and we even got to visit some Cali family and friends before all of the lockdowns.

FEBRUARY

The dance competitions continued into February with the Jump competition in Phoenix. Every Phoenix competition typically means driving back and forth from home to Phoenix several times throughout the weekend, grabbing stuff our dancers forgot, bringing lunch, dinner and snacks, helping with hair and makeup and never missing a performance. Somehow LaToya planned getaway schedule so that LaShawn’s alone weekend away coincided with the competition weekend, meaning she would be running competition weekend by herself with all five kids in tow. Where would we be without GRACE! Thank God for matcha tea and friends to help out when we were in need. The competition weekend went off without a hitch and LaShawn enjoyed the getaway he needed. He went to Sunrise Ski Resort with his fraternity brothers and got in some much needed skiing and solitude.

Later in the month, Krissy got her learner’s permit and did phenomenally on her PSAT, ringing in attention from several colleges. LaShawn escorted both Kaitlyn and Khloe to their individual daddy daughter dances. And LaToya busied herself building props for her event planning business. She was oblivious to how covid-19 would effect her business plans.

MARCH

As covid woes started budding, Krissy got a stubborn baby tooth pulled at the oral surgeon and provided the family with some comic relief as we watched hilarious videos of her coming off the anesthesia. Kaitlyn and LaToya build an award winning box car replica of Vanellope Von Schweetz’ car for a school function. And Kaitlyn competed at Groove, her very first dance competition!

Spring break came along and we spent the week on a staycation. We golfed and hit up amusement parks, and played in water, just before everything shut down in Arizona. We had no idea going into spring break that the kids would not return to school for the rest of the year. They were all confused and saddened by not being able to return to their classrooms. It hit Khloe and Krissy the hardest. The girls all had to switch from studio dancing to Zoom classes in our backyard. We navigated through our first few weeks of virtual learning as best we could and tried to wrap our minds around our new normal. Shawn and LaToya tag teamed and created new schedules to balance the new dynamics.

We had been planning a birthday party for Khloe and nearly ALL of her guests cancelled once the state starting down. By the end of the month we planned and executed our first Zoom birthday party. The Moana party decorations were beautiful and the Zoom guests were so gracious, but the kids did not understand it and Khloe couldn’t wait for it to be over so she could open presents and do a scavenger hunt.

We spent the first few weeks of lockdowns out at Bartlett Lake and getting outdoors.

APRIL

We had a small 2nd birthday celebration for Kai and Krissy got expressive by beginning her blonde hair journey. She attended her first online dance convention when the competition portion was cancelled. She made senior company and her dance studio drove all the way to our house to stake a poster in our yard to announce it.

The biggest event in April was the transitioning of our law firm to remote working. We spent most of the month perfecting systems to allow us to seamlessly manage our client work from home.

MAY

After adjusting to new dynamics during his kindergarten year, KJ shined at his drive through graduation. It wasn’t what we had envisioned, but it was sentimental and allowed us to celebrate our boy for his accomplishments.

One of our favorite families invited us on a camping trip and we immediately accepted the invitation to get away from all the covid isolation. We spent 3 days in a little paradise. Our kids played with a diverse group of new friends while we relaxed and enjoyed the outdoors. It was just what we needed and we didn’t want to leave that Sunday. We were only about a 3 miles from the campsite when we turned on our phones to the news of George Floyd’s death. It was like a gut punch after watching our beautifully diverse families enjoy a wonderful weekend together, only to be reminded of the evil that still exists in the hearts of a few. Tears flowed in our car as we drove home and prepared to help our communities heal from such a trauma.

JUNE

We spent part of June trying to find ways to protest police brutality without brutalizing police. A friend of ours invited us to a peaceful protest that was unaffiliated with any groups or organizations. It was just a diverse group of citizens who wanted to see change and healing. It was beautiful and well received.

Khloe, the baby girl, had her very first dance performance and shared the stage with big sister Kaitlyn. They did so well. Khloe is a natural dancer with strength and personality. She was invited to join an advanced level and we signed her up. Little did we know she didn’t even want to dance. She stuck around for several weeks and then finally told us she didn’t like dance, she just liked being on stage.

Kaitlyn realized her passion for baking and started brainstorming business ideas. We hosted our out of town niece’s 5th birthday party at our house with the cousins. It was so nice for them to come together in spite of everything happening around them.

Krissy turned 16 in June and we had been planning a Sweet 16 party for for 2 years. In March, we started going back and forth on whether or not to have it. LaToya, wanted to push it off until later in the year, to allow things to settle a bit, but Krissy felt unsure that a party would ever happen if it didn’t happen in June. She had a point. Everything was changing so fast around her and who knew if things would ever be the same again. We went back and forth and finally decided to throw a Sweet 16 party the best we could in the middle of the covid era. We sent out invitations to Krissy’s Hip Hop Mask-querade and required that all attendees wear masks and submit to temperature checks. LaToya built props, donned the backyard with lighting, and got ready for the party. Two days before the party, there were reports of covid cases increasing in Arizona. The party guest list began dwindling by the droves. We still pushed forward being uncertain if we would have another opportunity. We required masks and held the party outdoors. It was a gorgeous evening filled with massive fireworks, a cake so cute we didn’t want to cut it, an awesome dj, performances, and cool props. It was a cool party that we would not have been able to execute had we waited until later in they year.

JULY

We spent most of July traveling. We usually fly somewhere exotic during the summer and or take an rv trip. We were planning to vacation in Jamaica, but covid threw a big wrench into those plans. So we planned a three week trip split between visiting family in Georgia, visiting Orlando amusement parks, and beach bumming in the Florida panhandle.

On the day we were set fly to Florida, LaShawn worked right up until it was time to leave for the airport, and it wasn’t until then that he started packing! We didn’t get to the airport ticket counter until 3 minutes before the 45 minute cut off time. The ticket counter agent haggled with us and we were not able to get our bags on the flight. By some sort of super powers, LaShawn quickly arranged for a friend to come and grab our bags so they could ship them to us and Florida in the event we made the flight. We ran like the wind up to the security check point. We quickly removed shoes and laptops and belts and rushed our way through the line. We ran as fast as the seven of us could towards the gate, but it was too late. We were too late. We missed our flight to Orlando. Unfortunately, we had booked a super cheap (due to covid), yet non-refundable flight. We had never missed a flight before. We walked solemnly out to the curb where LaShawn’s friend was waiting with our bags. We sat down and pondered how we’d get out of the jam. We searched for other flights. And discussed all the reasons trying to get all 7 of us on a stand-by flight wouldn’t work. Then KJ suggested we just drive down to Florida. Krissy rolled her eyes so hard at the idea, it seemed her eyes would get stuck in the back of her head. LaShawn didn’t give it much thought at first, still sulking and feeling bad about missing the flight. But LaToya jumped at the idea and searched for vans to rent. It was a wild idea, but we had just taken that drive two years earlier in an rv. LaShawn came around to the idea and we calculated the time it would take to get there. We went for it! Our teenager was angry and may still be working to forgive us for putting her in the back seat for thousands of miles with her siblings, but the other kids were excited for the adventure. We booked a van, picked it up, and hit the road that evening. We stayed in hotels along the way and enjoyed a nice impromptu road trip.

We spent the 4th of July in Atlanta with family watching fireworks, met up with friends in Savannah, and visited more family in south Georgia, before meeting up with aunts and cousins in Jacksonville. We headed over to the beach cities in the panhandle and spent 10 days enjoying beautiful beaches. Destin, Panama, and Pensacola still have some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve seen.

We skipped over to Orlando after frolicking on the beaches. We went to Legoland, Universal Studios, and got to pet and feed alligators at Black Hammock. We will never forget Black Hammock. Our rental van broke down on us at Black Hammock. We had finished seeing the alligators and went to start the van to no success. It was dead. We decided to eat at the onsite restaurant while trying to get a jump. The jump didn’t work. We called the rental company (who shall remain nameless because they ultimately gave us a sufficient credit for our troubles), was not answering their toll free number. We tried selecting every option we could to get a representative to no avail. We finally got to a working line and waited on hold, for literally hours, to get a representative on the line. We were hung up on more than once and when they finally sent roadside assistance, it was near dark. The person they sent was unequipped to service vehicle and had only been sent to establish that the vehicle, in fact, would not start. Once he did that, we were told that we would have to wait, in the dark, in alligator town, with our 5 kids for another roadside assistance provider. Thankfully we had made a friend and who helped us get back to our condo while LaShawn waited in the dark…in alligator country…for a provider that he hoped would arrive at a reasonable time. A tow-truck driver finally arrived at 9:30pm, hitched the van and gave LaShawn a ride back to the condo where we were all reunited.

We made tons of memories during our summer trip and met a few new friends to keep in touch with. We headed back home just in time to get ready for homeschooling.

AUGUST

August marked a new era as LaToya started homeschooling the 4 youngest kids. This was her second go at homeschooling with a newfound motivation after the first time ended so badly. With all the uncertainty over how the school year would look for the kids, their individual needs, and her desire to avoid all the previous issues experienced with distant/virtual learning, she readied herself to teach the kids. The curriculum books arrived and she rolled out the unit studies she had planned. It was shaky, exciting, but full of grace as she began walking out something God had been calling our family to for a few years.

The law firm experienced unprecedented growth and LaShawn and LaToya spent time perfecting the business. Kaitlyn had a themed sleepover with a few close friends and we introduced a new member to the family for her birthday…Brownie the guinea pig…sweet and skittish little guy who job was to fill the void of the puppy LaShawn refused to let the family get. Krissy was elected as the first African American Vice President of Pulse Dance Company. LaToya grew sick of doing hair and started cutting hers.

SEPTEMBER

We opened up the month with a 7 family camping trip. It was our first time camping with such a large group and it felt like our group took over the campsite. Many of the campers had never camped before and it was a neat experience sharing something we love with friends. The kids played all day long each day. We cooked together, sat around camp fires, rode bikes, played in frigid lake water, saw amazing sights and made wonderful memories.

KJ built his first robot from scratch…a cute little night light. He then recorded his first video for his upcoming YouTube channel, “KJ Likes.” He became interested in robots after watching a presentation from an engineering friend of ours during our All About Me homeschooling unit. We invited 26 professionals from our community to a do Zoom presentations on their profession for the kids so that we can get them thinking about their futures.

LaShawn gifted LaToya with a weekend away on a writing retreat for her birthday. It was just what she needed. She got 12,000 words written in a book project and some much needed rest and time with God.

OCTOBER

October brought more lake trips, pumpkin patches and festivals, and dance performances. We attended the only wedding we were invited to for the year (it was BEAUTIFUL!), and ended the month passing out scripture candy with stick grabbers at our neighborhood’s annual Halloween block party.

Yet the biggest event of October was our anniversary trip to Maui! The kids were well taken care of by our former nanny and we had the time of our lives in the newly opened state of Hawaii. Our flight was the maiden flight into Maui since covid hit. We arrived on the first day the state allowed tourists to visit with negative covid tests and QR codes. It was a tricky process getting there and making it through the extremely long lines at the airport and new processes. But once the Hawaiian air hit our faces, it was all worth it. We spent our honeymoon in Hawaii and it has held a special place in our hearts ever since.

A lot of things were different during our visit, as expected. Many places were closed, shopping centers were like ghost towns. Some natives of the land were hostile toward tourists and even hostile towards other non-native residents. There were no luaus and many excursions were closed down. However, in true Jenkins fashion, we knew how to make the best of things. We hit the beaches, took beautiful coastal drives, found the only place on the island playing live music, found a snorkeling excursion and enjoyed our gorgeous condo. Hawaii did not disappoint and covid did not kill the Aloha!

NOVEMBER

We opened up the month on an elimination diet that our naturopathic doctor had placed the entire family on. For the first time in years, we were cooking everything we consumed and eating an incredibly clean diet. We were feeling great and felt motivated to continue parts of the diet permanently. However, there was a much concern over how Thanksgiving would go! There were entire pans of dressing thrown in the garbage after trying to make the dish with no corn, no sugar, no dairy, no gluten, no eggs, etc. There were tears, and maybe a little yelling. But by the time 3pm on Thanksgiving rolled around, there was yummy food on the table and it all worked out. Phew!

Earlier in the month, went and voted as a family and used the election drama that ensued afterwards for homeschool content. Krissy had her first college tour and we put up a Thanksgiving tree for the first time ever.

While posing for pictures at a family photo shoot, LaShawn surprised LaToya with a recommitment proposal, equipped with a gorgeous ring and a message to the kids about the meaning of a proposal.

DECEMBER

KJ turned 7 and we had a Marvel Zoom party. He had a blast and it was right up his alley…quick and easy. We also welcomed a new family member for his birthday…Leppy the leopard gecko. We had no idea we’d also become the home to 1100 mealworms in a mealworm farm once we had to figure out a cost effective way to feed Leppy. Thank God for friends who showed us the ropes!

We had our annual gingerbread house competition and invited social media to judge. Every team stepped it up for 2020 and it was a close competition. Krissy and Khloe pulled out the win with a lovely little pink and purple Louie Vuitton meets Barbie styled house they dubbed the North Pole Designer.

We participated in the “You Got Bless’d” project hosted by our church, Faith Christian Center. We descended on Tempe Marketplace and blessed random strangers with gifts and random acts of kindness. It was beautiful to watch the kids and their generous hearts as they blessed stranger after stranger.

For LaShawn’s birthday we all took a trip to Aspen. We spent 5 days there and it was a winter wonderland! We stayed in a ski in ski out resort, drank hot chocolate to our hearts content, ice skated, met new pen pals, and skied new and challenging trails. Even the baby got on some skis and went down a few training hills for the first time. Khloe conquered her fears of getting on and off the gondola, Kaitlyn and KJ grew more confident on the slopes, Krissy skied some blues with daddy, LaToya enjoyed the beautiful scenery and a few slopes, and LaShawn played for 5 days on his skis. We had a grand time. So grand that LaShawn didn’t want to get off the slopes the morning we were set to fly back. We left the condo late and…you guessed it…we were set to miss another flight. This time, however, only LaShawn missed the flight. He dropped the rest of the family off at the ticket counter just in time to make the flight while he drove to return the rental car and caught another flight a few hours later. We think he has learned a lesson, but we shall see.

We had a quiet and sweet Christmas with a huge feast of food. We woke up and sang Happy Birthday to Jesus, before celebrating with homemade donuts. We opened gifts and the kids played outside all day! And they spent all day outside every day for a week after Christmas.

We spent our New Year’s Eve looking at Christmas lights, playing games, making a mess in the house with silly string and confetti, eating junk, and popping fireworks.

What did we think of 2020?

2020 was not the year we expected it to be. It was better. Yes, we experienced some losses and had to make a ton of adjustments. Things were very hard at times. But the maturation, the family bonding, the revelation, and the positioning we experienced was not something we could have planned. 2020 didn’t happen to us, it happened for us. It was an incubation year in so many ways and the Jenkins are emerging in 2021 stronger, wiser, and even more graceful. We thank God for 2020, His hedge of protection and His undying love. We are in great expectation for what He will do in and through us in 2021.
